PG Tips Tea

Arthur Brooke opened his first tea shop in Manchester in 1869. He founded Brooke Bond and Company, and the company began selling tea wholesale in the 1870s. The tea was originally called "Pre-Gest Tea" because it was marketed as a digestive aid. After World War II, labeling regulations prevented the company from describing tea as a digestive aid, so the name was shortened to "PG". The company added "Tips" to indicate that only the top two leaves and bud of each tea plant are used. PG Tips was one of the first companies to introduce tea bags in the UK market in the 1960s. PG Tips introduced pyramid bags in 1990. In 2018, PG Tips transitioned to biodegradable plant-based tea bags. PG Tips' first television ad aired in 1956, featuring anthropomorphic chimpanzees called the Tipps family. The campaign was a huge success, and PG Tips became the largest tea company in the world. In September 2023, Lipton Teas and Infusions relaunched PG Tips with new square-shaped bags and packaging.
